Roots of Resilience: Disasters, Community, and Sustainability in Southern Italy
This month-long, nine-credit study abroad program in Rome and Sicily offers an interdisciplinary exploration of disaster resilience, community sustainability and environmental public health in one of Europe’s most hazard-prone regions. Hosted in collaboration with the Center for Disaster Resilient Communities and the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, students engage in research excursions and community activities, visiting sites such as Mt. Etna, rural farms and historic villages. Sicily’s unique blend of environmental challenges and cultural traditions provides an immersive setting for students to study volcanic activity, seismic risk and climate impacts while developing skills for future leadership in global public health and sustainable community development.
