The Seattle neighborhoods of South Park and Georgetown, situated in the Duwamish Valley, have traditionally experienced environmental injustice and suffer from poor health outcomes, both of which are exacerbated by the effects of climate change. In Fall 2022, a team of researchers from the Duwamish Valley Youth Corps, the Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC), the City of Seattle and the University of Washington Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences surveyed households in these neighborhoods to gather individual perspectives on issues related to building climate resilience.
These interviews revealed that community members prioritize environmental health, hope to see more green spaces, identify their community connectivity as a strength and want their views incorporated into efforts to develop community resilience in their neighborhoods. These experiences were then used to create a storymap that integrated survey data with testimonies and images from collaborators and community members who took part in the study and/or were affected by the Duwamish Valley floods.
